The Affordable Care Act or as some know it, Obamacare is here. You’ve read about it, heard about it and, even if you currently have health insurance, you need to know about it.

If you don’t have health insurance because it was too expensive, it might now be affordable.  If you couldn’t get insurance before because of a pre-existing condition, now you can!

The problem: signing up can be a hassle.

A client of mine, I will call him Henry, was suddenly unemployed. He is 60 and single. COBRA was just too expensive. He went to the Marketplace website for help.

“I’m a computer guy and I couldn’t get through the process,” he said.

So he came to me and we ended up enrolling him in a plan with a zero deductible at a cost of $115.18 per month. Henry qualified for other options with high deductibles that were as low as $7 per month, he wanted better coverage.

It’s hardly a surprise that even Henry, a “computer guy,” was overwhelmed, frustrated and confused. And according to news reports, he is far from alone.

The ConnectforHealthCO.com website is steadily getting better. The staff is friendly and I give them high marks for trying to help.

But, most are not licensed brokers, so they are limited to the advice they can legally provide. If you choose to use a certified broker, it is free of charge; the insurance company pays the commission.
Henry received a tax credit of $440.08 per month based on his age and adjusted gross income. As a result, he was able to buy a rich plan at a low cost.

If you want to qualify for a tax credit, you must first apply for Medicaid and be denied, this process has been difficult for many.

If you are a single person making more than $1,274 per month and less than $3,830 you should qualify for some type of tax credit. For a household of two, the minimum is $1,720 and the maximum $5,168. So far about 80% of those applying have qualified for a tax credit.

One important point: You must pay a penalty if you don’t have health insurance in effect by April 1.
In next month’s article, I will go over the differences among the various insurance carriers and plans. I will discuss who the winners and losers are in this new environment.
