The 4-H organization has over 6.5 million members throughout the United States and is the nation’s largest youth development and empowerment organization reaching kids in urban neighborhoods, suburban school yards and rural farming communities.

For those of us blessed to have childhood memories that include 4-H, it’s easy to understand the infectious passion Tammy Taylor has in the role of organizational leader for the Pleasant Park 4-H Club in Conifer.

Raised in the central valley of California, Tammy is thankful for her own 4-H experiences.  “I participated in the livestock, gardening, sewing and leather craft activities, which was a positive experience for both my family as well as me.”

The 4-H organization has over 6.5 million members throughout the United States and is the nation’s largest youth development and empowerment organization reaching kids in urban neighborhoods, suburban school yards and rural farming communities.

The goal of 4-H is to develop citizenship, leadership, responsibility and life skills of youths. Members participate in a variety of learning activities in the areas of science, including veterinary science, healthy living, food security, citizenship in addition to many pet and livestock activities, rocketry, shooting sports and if there’s not an activity you’re interested in, you can pursue a self-determined activity.

The Youth Solution program establishes 4-H’ers as leaders of a “Revolution of Responsibility,” which is a movement for positive change in every community in America.

4-H Citizenship programs empower young people to be well-informed citizens who are actively engaged in their communities and the world.

The Youth Scientists program is impacting the future through activities in robotics, aerospace, alternative energy, engineering,  environmental science, agri-science and veterinary science. 4-H youth are winning international rocketry competitions and using GIS technology to map a section of the Appalachian Trail.

Pleasant Park 4-H has been in the Conifer for over 50 years and is the second oldest 4-H club in Jefferson County. Originally chartered in 1960, the esteemed charter hangs in the CSU 4-H extension office located at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Lakewood. It is a great group if you’re crazy about horses as members volunteer at various horse rescues. They also make delectable canine goodies for their version of a bake sale for the Intermountain Humane Society and also run the petting zoo for Mountain Resource Center’s annual Christmas party.

One of the club’s main goals is to participate in community service both locally and internationally. Members rallied round Haiti Earthquake Relief and the Heifer Project. “One of our members went to Equador to assist their spay and neuter project, and she is in the pre-vet medicine program at CSU,” Tammy shared.

Dr. Hazel McKeever, a Conifer resident, established the McKeever Arena as an “opportunity to help mold the ideals and ideas of our own young people.” Her dream was to “build barns for our horses, a shed for the judging of our livestock, a ball field and possibly tennis courts, as well as picnic grounds with a fine fireplace for wiener roast and community sings.”

Dr. McKeever noted that Pauline Griffith shared her own passion for her childhood pony, Johnny, when she dedicated her land to the youth of Conifer, which became the McKeever Arena in 1965.
