Herds of female elk with their young are on the move in Evergreen as summer wanes and the calves mature. About 100 crossed Highway 74 near Elk Meadow Open Space Park recently, stopping traffic as the does helped the fawns, still sporting spots, to cross safely. Some of the mature females moved into the traffic, stopping cars, while others helped teach the young to jump the guard rail and brave crossing the highway as motorist watched and waited. Meanwhile, in small bachelor herds, the bull elk wait for the fall rutting season to start.

Great music, great crowd, great cause for JOY International at a fundraiser Sunday, Aug. 5, at Conifer Commuinty Park at Beaver Ranch. JOY International is Jeff Brodsky's local nonprofit for the rescue of victims of global child sex trafficking. Jeff goes barefoot to remember and honor the children he is dedicated to help. Sharon Trilk of 285bound.com lead the organizing team for the event, aided by local volunteers and supporters of JOY International based in Conifer.

I am in awe of my women friends who have this natural inclination toward children. Miraculously, they seem to know exactly what to do when they see one. As I squirm and try to think of something to say to this alien creature, they swoop them up into their arms and make them giggle with their internally programmed baby language.

The historic Yellow Barn at Bradford Junction in Conifer is being offered to any local trust or nonprofit that is willing to fund and manage the replatting of Bradford Junction into four lots through Jefferson County. Bradford Junction is located at Highway 73 and Barkley Road. Barn owners Andy and Denise Clarks estimated the cost of Jefferson County replatting would be $70,000 to $90,000. The Clarks warn the barn is "deteriorating and won't stand forever."
